If you’re a childcare educator looking to work independently and source flexible relief shifts through platforms like Your Staff Hub, you’ll need an Australian Business Number (ABN).

The good news is that applying for an ABN is a simple and free process.

This guide will take you through each step, ensuring you can start your journey as a self-employed childcare educator with ease.

What is an ABN?

An ABN is an 11-digit number that identifies your business to the government and the public. It is essential for sole traders as it allows you to:

  • Invoice childcare centres for your work
  • Register for Goods and Services Tax (GST) if required
  • Avoid pay-as-you-go (PAYG) tax withholding
  • Claim business expenses related to your work.

Step 1. Check your eligibility

Before applying for an ABN, ensure that you meet the eligibility criteria. As a childcare educator operating as self-employed, you qualify if you are:

  • Carrying on or starting a business (including as a sole trader or contractor) in Australia
  • Providing services with the intention of making a profit.

For more details on eligibility, visit the official Australian Business Register (ABR) website: ABR ABN Application Guide.

Step 2. Gather your information

To make the application process smooth, have the following details ready:

  • Personal information (full name, date of birth, tax file number)
  • Business details (business name, contact information, main business activity – e.g. relief childcare services)
  • Business address (residential address if you don’t have a separate business address).

In some cases, the ATO may require supporting documents at the time of application, so be sure to have these ready. This may include proof of identity documents (e.g. driver's license, passport), trust deeds or partnership agreements, business registrations, and evidence of business ownership.

Step 3. Apply online

You can apply for an ABN online through the ABR website. Follow these steps:

  1. Visit the ABR ABN application page
  2. Select “Apply for an ABN”
  3. Choose your business structure (for most educators operating as self-employed, this is usually sole trader)
  4. Provide your personal and business details
  5. Describe your business activities (e.g. relief childcare educator providing temporary staffing for childcare centres)
  6. Submit your application.

Most applications are processed instantly, and you will receive your ABN immediately. However, in some cases, the Australian Taxation Office (ATO) may review your application, which can take up to 28 days.

Step 4. Register a business name (optional)

As a sole trader, you can operate under your personal name or choose to register a business name.

If you prefer a business name, you must register it with the Australian Securities and Investments Commission (ASIC). This can be done via the ASIC website.

Step 5. Understand your tax obligations

As a sole trader, you need to manage your own tax responsibilities, including:

  • Keeping records of your income and expenses
  • Paying tax on your earnings through your annual tax return
  • Registering for GST if the income generated through your ABN exceeds $75,000 per year.

For more information, visit the ATO website or consult a registered tax agent.

Step 6. Start working as a relief childcare educator

Once you have your ABN, you can start sourcing self-employed work through platforms like Your Staff Hub.

Your Staff Hub is an app that connects childcare educators directly with childcare centres, allowing you to pick up relief shifts that suit your schedule. You can choose shifts that work for you, set your own rates, and regain work-life balance.

Your Staff Hub doesn’t charge set-up costs or ongoing subscription fees, giving you peace of mind. Your Staff Hub’s fee structure is transparent, and we use a verification and two-way rating system for both centres and educators to keep things honest and trustworthy.
